Are you looking for quality health & safety training by highly qualified and experienced tutors?
Why not seek the help of an independent health & safety training organisation that is registered with the largest examination board
but also develops tailored courses to suit the client?
IN-HOUSE COURSES
CIEH LEVEL 2 AWARD IN HEALTH & SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE
Previously the CIEH BASIC / FOUNDATION HEALTH & SAFETY CERTIFICATE
This nationally accepted certificate course requires six hours health & safety training on general health & safety issues (including such subjects as accident prevention, manual handling and equipment safety).
Assessment at the conclusion of the course is by multi-choice or oral examination. Wherever possible we like to mark the papers and give direct feedback to the students (although official results have to wait for the papers to be marked by a computer!).
The course is intended for anyone at work and can be useful in demonstrating compliance with statutory requirements. However, we have found that the combination of this course with the Risk Assessment course provides extremely valuable introductory health & safety training for supervisors and managers.
CIEH LEVEL 2 AWARD IN RISK ASSESSMENT
A completely new course designed to ensure the workforce are aware of risk assessments and able to contribute to organisation risk assessments. The one day session includes the 30 question multi-choice examination.
It is not considered that succesful candidates will have demonstrated their ability to carry out risk assessments; for that you need Level 3!
CIEH LEVEL 3 AWARD IN HEALTH & SAFETY in the WORKPLACE
FOR SUPERVISORS

An updated version of the old certificate course the four days of health & safety training concentrates upon supervisory responsibilities. It is intended for anyone in a supervisory or line management role. Statutory health & safety requirements and accident prevention techniques are important parts of the syllabus.
Sessions on management organisation include risk assessment, auditing, investigating incidents and keeping records. The role of the supervisor in monitoring, motivating, training and handling conflict are also covered. Wherever possible, practical exercises are held within the actual workplace.
Assessment for the certificate is by a 60 question multi-choice examination on the final day of the course.
CIEH LEVEL 3 AWARD IN RISK ASSESSMENT PRINCIPLES & PRACTICE
An updated version of the old certificate course the seven hours of health & safety training contact time covers the principles
of risk assessment within the health & safety framework. Simple
methods of assessing risk (including a numeric model) are practised.
This is an intensive but enjoyable course suitable for supervisors
or safety representatives. However, a considerable degree of DELEGATE commitment is
required; the exam board suggest anything upto 13 hours may be needed to complete the assignment!
The final assessment consists of an actual risk assessment to a
prescribed format which is undertaken in the delegates own workplace
during the week following
the course. This forms the base of a management report to demonstrate the
student's knowledge of risk assessment techniques. All students receive
a personal, confidential, detailed
feedback on their project.
CIEH CERTIFICATE IN STRESS AWARENESS
Workplace stress is increasingly being seen as a major cause of
absenteeism in the UK. This level one health & safety training
course is designed to enable organisations to boost productivity
and staff
morale by demonstrating ways and means of reducing workplace stress.
Although aimed at general workers it has proven to provide an excellent introduction
to the subject for more senior staff.
This is a one day course, including the assessment, and covers
the definitions of stress, stress as an occupational health hazard
and identification of basic
workplace stressors, development of basic controls for work related stressors
and responsibilities imposed under UK legislation.
By the end of the course, delegates should be more aware of the
importance of controlling stress in the workplace and will have developed
a basic toolkit
to
monitor and control stress.
The certificate is awarded to candidates who have successfully
completed the course and the assessment at the conclusion of the
training session.
The assessment
is in the form of a review of the students' own work practices and is completed
under tutor supervision.
CIEH PRINCIPLES OF MANUAL HANDLING CERTIFICATE
This is a first level qualification in health & safety and is
designed to complement the CIEH Foundation Certificate in Health & Safety
although it may be used as a stand-alone course.
A minimum of three hours health & safety training covers the
process of manual handling in the workplace, manual handling injuries
and the activities that cause
them, manual handling assessment and control options as well as responsibilities
imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
The Certificate is awarded to candidates who have completed the
course and the final short, objective test of 20 questions. Following
the examination
the tutor
usually provides immediate feedback to the students.
This course may be extended to a one-day in-house course to include
practical manual handling risk assessments.
CIEH LEVEL 2 AWARD IN THE PRINCIPLES OF COSHH
Previously the CIEH PRINCIPLES OF COSHH CERTIFICATE
This is a first level qualification in health & safety and is
designed to complement the CIEH Foundation Certificate in Health & Safety
although it may be used as a stand-alone course.
A minimum of three hours training covers definitions and types
of substances hazardous to health in the workplace, health effects
of hazardous substances
and their causes and responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances
Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999.
The Certificate is awarded to candidates who have completed the
course and the final short, objective test of 20 questions.
Following the examination
the tutor
usually provides immediate feedback to the students.
FIRE RISK ASSESSMENT
This is normally a one day course to acquaint delegates with the techniques
of fire risk assessment in low or medium risk premises. It looks
at the principal causes of fire and the basic problems associated
with fire spread as a basis for designing fire management systems.
The concept of the Fire Plan is developed together with system
requirements for warning, evacuation and fighting fire. Fire
Management Plans and Fire Prevention
Checklists are included.
Although the concept of Fire Marshals or Fire Wardens are covered,
this course does not include practical training in the use of fire
extinguishers (it
may be possible to add such training, if required).
An attendance certificate is awarded to persons completing the
course. An assessment of competence in the form of a written examination,
a multi-choice
examination
or a practical test can also be included.
SIMPLE SAFETY AUDITING
Depending upon the depth of knowledge required this may be run
as a one or two day course. The aim is to teach delegates the techniques
necessary to enable them to audit their own organisation’s
health & safety policy.
While acquainting delegates with BS8800:1996 and OHSAS 18001:1999
the course will mostly follow the recommendations of HSG65, Successful
Health & Safety
Management.
General concepts of health & safety, including accident prevention
and risk assessment, are reviewed as delegates are led to understand
the value of auditing
as a management tool. Practical exercises are undertaken at each stage of the
process to encourage the honing of auditing skills.
An attendance certificate is awarded to persons completing the
course. An assessment of competence in the form of a written examination,
a multi-choice examination
or a practical test may also be available.
BESPOKE TRAINING
Examination courses can often be adapted or extended so that the
health & safety training is directly relevant to the normal work activities of
the trainees. However, there are many instances where specific
site or subject training would be more appropriate.
We can supply sessions on general health & safety awareness,
manual handling, display screen equipment, safety auditing techniques
and many other topics.
Domino Risk Management Ltd is approved as a health & safety training organisation by CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health)
for many of their courses
(and would not anticipate any great difficulty in obtaining approval for
any others). All courses are, of course, run in compliance with the
examination board's
requirements and subject to external audits.
Domino Risk Management Ltd also issues
certificates in its own name for courses that have been tailored
to a client's needs and requirements. Because these
are not
accredited to a national standard we include the course duration and the course content
on the actual certificate.

CASE STUDY
A multi-national company identified the need to improve safety
auditing at unit level but left the method to each unit.
The UK Operations Manager was aware of
Domino Risk Management and asked for advice. Working together we produced
a two day course and trained six staff members in auditing
techniques (with particular
reference to HSG65 and OHSAS18001). The course was a success and the enthusiasm
of the site auditors helped to improve the safety culture of the organisation.
Over the next few months the auditors identified weaknesses in
the site risk assessments. Domino was again contacted but this time
we felt the
CIEH Risk
Assessment course was the best approach. However, the company wanted
to ensure the course
was specifically targeted for them so we extended the contact time and
included live risk assessments around the actual site as well as our
standard course
exercises. Needless to say we based the course upon the risk assessment
scheme that was
already in operation.
