SAFETY POLICY
Every employer of five or more persons needs a written safety
policy that details the overall policy on health & safety, the organisation & communications
channels and the individual arrangements (first aid, electricity,
machinery, manual handling etc.). The policy needs to be reviewed
and updated on a regular basis.

RISK ASSESSMENT
Every employer is required to carry out a risk assessment associated with
their operations. This includes the hazards (potential for harm)
and
the risks (likelihood and severity of harm). Once risks are assessed
and, if necessary, quantified, it is necessary to ensure that appropriate
risk control systems are in place and are being used. If you employ 5 or more staff the risk assessment must be in writing (albeit how do you prove you have completed an assessment if it is not written?).

are qualified professionals that are members of the appropriate
professional organisations. The maintenance of such membership
usually involves some form of Continuing Professional Development.

CASE STUDY
A small manufacturing company was advised by its insurance company
to employ a consultant. The MD was very conscious of health & safety and tried very
hard to instill a safety conscious culture throughout his organisation. Unfortunately,
no-one was health & safety trained and there was an almost total absence
of paperwork.
Risk assessments were quickly completed and the existing operational
protocols were included as Safe Systems of Work. A Safety Manual
was then produced
that included a suitable Safety Policy, the Risk Assessments and a Management
Auditing
Programme to help maintain standards and to provide an audit trail.
The company developed very nicely and moved
into larger premises. We then helped to develop their safety
policy and review
all of their risk
assessments. This is on-going but we are also involved in routine auditing of their site and attend as a member of their safety committee.
